Biography
Shozo Shimamoto was born in Osaka, Japan in 1928. In 1954 he helped to found the avant garde Gutai group, which is one of the most important phenomena of the international experimental postwar art. Shimamotos works from this period are in collections such as those of the Tate Gallery and the Tate Modern (in both London and Liverpool) and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. He is furthermore an internationally renowned Mail Artist and Performer. In 1986 he visited Mail Artists in Eastern and Western Europa who he asked to write, paint or stamp messages on his shaved head. He published the Mail Art magazine AU for several years.
He died January 25, 2013.
