Sasa Merts
Aka Sasa Merts, lives and works in Hamburg. The book Abba-Life Can Be she co-published with Görd Kaa, she describes as ”a fanciful story about the popband ABBA being extraterrestrians on a mission, about art as a replacement for religion and the Church Of Art as the one and only place for reflection and contemplation.” In the years after the turn of the century Mertens cofounded Garage Kunsthandel in Hamburg, as an ”Artroom for installing and beholding flashes of Genius.”
Sasa Merts has worked has worked in a range of media, from music, writing, painting, photography, video, installation art and sculpture, to the activity and exchanges within the Mail Art Network, which is the linking element also to Niels Lomholt aka Lomholt Formular Press.
Mertens’ main work in recent years has been sculpture (e.g. football players) and collages based upon press photographs. Mertens elaborates on the process of collage: ”of cutting people out of their operative environment, placing them into the void of a white sheet of paper and thus dissociating them from their respective social situations (and vice verca) these works become virtual interventions into disputes, conflicts and disruptive situations.”
